Fat Activists – Part 2

Thursday, August 12th, 2004

I posted a follow-up to a comment received on my previous Fat Activists article in the forums. Here’s an excerpt:

…the number of overweight Americans increased from 25 to 33 percent between 1980 and 1991. That number has increased to over one in three people. The prevailing reason for obesity is quite simply the lifestyle followed by people today. Genetic, environmental, psychological, and other causes of obesity all exist, but the bottom line is that more than 90-95% of those classified as “overweight” have the ability change their situation.

Not too long of a read, probably worth your while to join the discussion.

O’Reilly vs. Moore

Wednesday, August 11th, 2004

I managed to download a copy of the eight-minute interview between Bill O’Reilly and Michael Moore that was aired on the Fox News Channel three weeks ago. Depending on your stance, you may be disappointed, however, in that Bill failed not only to deter Moore’s manipulative line of questioning, but he also failed to defend our nation’s army. Here’s a letter written by a viewer:

Mr. O’Reilly,

Michael Moore asked you if you would sacrifice your children in Iraq. The men and women I served with there were adults who made an adult commitment to serve the country. I am fully aware of the pain that each casualty brings, but for Moore to insinuate that these brave and capable warriors are mere children who are sacrificed by their parents and country is demeaning to the commitment of those servicemen and women, and another twist of the facts by someone who recklessly and routinely sacrifices objectivity on the altar of ideology.

Additionally, Michael Moore blatantly focuses on a “Bush lied” theme, showing his lack of interest in the facts, and O’Reilly seemingly forgets to mention that WMD’s were only one factor in the equation that lead to the decision to get rid of the Butcher of Baghdad. Regardless of the fact that no WMD’s were found, the undisputable facts are that they had the capability to produce them, they used them in the past, they had ties to and alliances with known terrorists, they played the U.N. like a fine tuned violin for over ten years, were in continuous violation of numerous Security Council Resolutions, they were a threat to the region, a threat to U.S. security, they openly sponsored terrorism.

*Sigh* I’m done ranting for now. You may download the interview for yourself (I highly suggest you do). I’d love to hear your comments, as usual.

Collge Shopping

Tuesday, August 10th, 2004

I am definitely way behind on my college move-in arrangements: haven’t began packing, just started shopping, and really don’t have a list at all of what I should be getting. Time to kick it into overdrive!

Work is getting in the way… I guess it’s starting to feel like a real job now.

So, yesterday a friend and I decided to drive out to the Woodlands to visit that new Ikea and see what they had on sale. We headed up I-45, looking all around for it, but nowhere could it be found. After driving to the upper extremeties of the Woodlands, we turned around and drove back to the mall. Spotting a police officer, we drove up next to him and asked him, “How in the heck do you hide the blue monstrocity which is Ikea?” He gave us a quizzicle look, banged a few things out on his keyboard, and replied that there wasn’t a Ikea anywhere nearby: the “new” store was merely an expansion onto the existing location on the other side of town. Imagine our surprise!

Fat Activists

Sunday, August 8th, 2004

Oh, wow… Just go read the article; this is ridiculous (Matt!).

Unashamed of their size, fed up with fat jokes, and angry at the national obsession with dieting, overweight activists are mounting a feisty protest movement against what it calls the medical establishment’s campaign against obesity.

These people are defending a life-threatening, not to mention disgusting, condition that is one of the burdens plaguing society. They just need to suck it up (no pun intended) and change their lifestyles in order to get back to a normal, healthy weight!
